OSR water service restored

Outage began Sunday night

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Water service was restored Tuesday morning at Oklahoma State Reformatory in Granite, and operations at the facility have returned to normal.

An outage, which started Sunday, began when staff found the prison’s 250,000-gallon water tower drained, causing water to be shut off to most of the 108-year-old minimum security prison for men.

Oklahoma Department of Corrections officials learned Monday night the source of the problem was a leak in Granite that caused area water towers to drain. Additionally, several pumps at a nearby water treatment plant were not working, which hindered efforts to refill depleted water towers.

During the outage, the facility provided water in portable water tanks. The facility's 1,042 inmates never lost access to drinking water or water for food preparation.

Inmates on public works crews or food service could take showers in the few showers that worked.

Inmates also had 1-gallon jugs to carry drinking water to their housing units.
